17th of April - 31th of May 2015
Kjetil Berge (UK/N), Jason Havneraas (N/UK)
Jóhanna Ellen Ríkharðsdóttir (N/I) and Kristian Skylstad (N)
Curated by Kjersti Solbakken and Lars Sture
The themes of Rebirth and Excited Beauty are explored in cultural and creative exchanges between the artists: Jóhanna Ellen Ríkharðsdóttir, Kristian Skylstad, Jason Havneraas & Kjetil Berge. The exhibition encompasses new works across a broad range of media and other techniques, including painting, photography, audio work, performance and video, which together explore the difficult but simultaneously elevated position of art. The exhibition’s title is a pun linking NAV (Norwegian - social services/benefits administration) and the premises of Telemark Kunstsenter, a builing that formerly housed Norges Bank (the central bank of Norway). The project unfolds like a complex game, centering on economic distribution, power, dependence, helplessness, despair and shame. The four artists came together through the independent Oslo gallery, Noplace, where they have worked as both as artists and also curators. In recent years they have collaborated in a series of other projects in different institutions in both Norway and the UK.
7th February – 31th May
The program Memory Politics brings together artists concerned with the narration of history and the relationship between specific images, memory and collective imagination. The four works that will be on view approaches the opacity of image production and circulation through alternate strategies of entanglement and revelation. By essayistic re-contextualization of archive material, revisiting myth, and re-enacting historical memory, they comment on the past as something that can appear to us collectively. Questions of political amnesia, iconoclasm and ideology criticism are all posed on the level of subjective imagination, leaving the official record as the real fiction.
